LIFT partners respond to COVID-19
LIFT's partners are well-positioned to adapt and assist the management of the COVID-19 crisis and they are already responding by supporting Myanmar's vulnerable communities. Here is an example by LIFT's implementing partner Eden to inspire....

Myanmar's poorest peri-urban communities already experience an acute lack of income. Add a lack of savings, lack of hygiene items, and a lack of knowledge regarding COVID-19 and methods to protect oneself and reduce transmission. A vast number of people in these communites, including migrants and their families, already suffer from weakened immune systems and illnesses and they live in densely populated settlements. In this precarious and desperate situation, the impending proliferation of COVID-19 in these communities is projected to be swift and extensive. Pressure and desperation will drive families towards seeking any income opportunities no matter the human cost, which in turn is likely to result in significantly increased human trafficking and child labor, abuse and exploitation.
Eden, working with their NGO partner New Hope, have proposed a multi-pronged, multi-staged approach which would enable families to both cover their most urgent nutritional needs (and thus prevent prolonged malnutrition and additionally weakened immune systems), as well as the need for access to virus-prevention items such as masks and soap along with behavior changes related to hygiene and social interaction practices and enable long term recovery options for financially distressed families.
Eden and New Hope will work through the established household and community networks to distribute information and supplies to vulnerable communities at risk for COVID-19. This program addresses both short term relief and longer-term COVID-19 recovery. Within 7-10 days, at least 8,000 households will be reached to receive a combination of protective masks, soap, and awareness-raising items. This means within 7-10 days around 40,000 people are projected to be reached.
The LIFT FMO has approved USD25,000 within Eden's existing budget for:
Soap, masks, information and behaviour change: Soap and mask production to reach thousands of people and ensure income for the production. Through the distribution of soap and masks, Eden and New Hope will provide information to encourage behavior change and increase handwashing and surface cleaning. Eden will prioritize women-headed households focusing on women’s pivotal role in households and communities, and their unique needs, while engaging both men and women. Eden and New Hope will coordinate the distribution of pamphlets to 1,000 households per day, reaching an average of 5,000 people per day.
Addressing malnutrition and vulnerability: Eden will support New Hope to expand their existing programme of support, as needed, to support children's nutrition through their food/health assistance to the most vulnerable families in Yangon's very poor peri-urban communities.
Second stage anti-trafficking response: COVID-19 promises to have a dramatic effect on families and will result in increased pressure on younger family members to take on the financial burden of the household as older members fall ill or are needed for in-home care. Orphans, as a result of COVID-19, and young family members needed to earn income are at high risk of trafficking both during and post-outbreak. This requires a long-term recovery response, for which Eden has a sustainable strategy in their jewellery social enterprise.
