Khin Su comes from the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. Despite her best efforts, she was unable to find a job that would allow her to support her family in her home town. After one particularly grueling day of job-hunting, Khin Su made the decision to leave her home and seek a job in Yangon. It was an extremely difficult choice to make as her family is the most important thing in her life. Her family was worried but she promised them: “Don’t worry, I will come back to you”.
Khin Su traveled over 500 kilometres by train to get to Yangon. As the tranquility of green fields and farms faded into the factories and pavements of the big city, she worried about how she would find her way. She started working as a domestic worker in downtown Yangon but the salary was not sufficient to send money back home to her family. She felt sad that she could not keep her promise to them and missed home a great deal.
One day at the market, Khin Su overheard two women talking about finding work in a garment factory. The women showed her a Facebook post from the Aung Myin Hmu Garment Skills Training Centre in North Dagon. She called the telephone number and learned that the training was free of charge and that Aung Myin Hmu would help her to find a job in a garment factory after she completed the training.
Today, Khin Su is training at the centre and living in a hostel in North Dagon, where she has made friends from many different regions of Myanmar. The skills training she received has made a big difference in her life: “I never thought I would have the chance to learn garment sewing skills. Now I can finally send money home to support my family. I want to say thank you to Aung Myin Hmu from the bottom of my heart – this program has changed my life”.
