The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 European countries, built on the values of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and human rights. In 2012, the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advancing the causes of peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. The EU covers over 4 million km² and has 446 million inhabitants - the world’s third largest population after China and India.
Development assistance is one of the pillars of the EU’s external action, alongside foreign, security, and trade policies. The EU and its member states provide over half of all global development aid. That makes the EU the world’s leading donor. European development policy fosters sustainable development and stability in developing countries, with the ultimate goal of eradicating extreme poverty.
The EU has been a firm supporter of Myanmar’s democratic transition, peace and national reconciliation and inclusive socio-economic development since reforms began in 2011. For the period 2014-2020, the EU adopted a bilateral Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP) with EUR 688 million to promote good governance and the rule of law, and assist the peace process, education, nutrition and the agricultural sector. In addition, the EU closely cooperates with Myanmar on human rights, environment, biodiversity, sustainable forestry, renewable energy and action against climate change.
