Myanmar is seeking to update its colonial era 1894 Land Acquisition Act to reflect the country‘s development needs in the 21st century. This technical review has been prepared by land resettlement safeguards experts to inform decision makers and other stakeholders in Myanmar regarding the Draft Land Acquisition Act 2017. This review draws on the lessons from other post British colonial countries in the South and East Asia Region, many of whom have had decades of experience since their first attempts to move away from out-dated colonial era legislation including the 1894 Act which was a common colonial law across former British colonies.
