The Metta Development Foundation has published a Farmer Field School Facilitators Handbook, funded by LIFT.  This easy- to- read document explores best practices, identifies lessons and gives other ‘how to’ advice based on their experience of facilitating farmer field schools for upland rice in Shan and Kachin States.

Metta conducted the field schools in collaboration with local organisations and villagers, aiming to improve basic food security through the introduction of better methods for sustainable upland rice cultivation. The  yields of participating farmers increased significantly, more than doubling from two to five tons per hectare.

The authors reflect on project design, and technical planning and methods, making the handbook a useful resource for anyone interested in facilitating similar field school projects or farmer extension services.
