Nay Pyi Taw, 10 Dec- In his address at the National Knowledge Forum and Seminar on Priorities in Agriculture Development of Myanmar organized by Livelihood and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) at the assembly hall of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this morning, Union Min i s ter for Agriculture and Irrigation U Myint Hlaing said Myanmar was also facing natural disasters as a serious threat posed by climate change while striving for development of agriculture sector and rural region and poverty alleviation scheme. The Union minister pointed out potentials for agriculture development as 18 per cent of the total area of the nation had been utilized as arable farmlands.
Next, Union Minister for Environmental Conservation and Forestry U Win Tun said that spotlighted degradation of land resources due to excessive and reckless farming.
Then Union Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Dr Kan Zaw, Swiss Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Christoph Burgener, FAO Resident Representative Ms. Bui Thi Lan and LIFT Fund Chairperson Ms. Veronique Lorenzon gave accounts of matters related to agricultures sector, livestock and fishery industry and environmental conservation. Afterwards, a documentary video about the inspection tours made by President U Thein Sein and Vice-Presidents Dr Sai Mauk Kham and U Nyan Tun was shown.
The Union ministers and guests observed agricultural booths displayed by FAO and LIFT Fund at the hall. Then resource persons read out papers respectively, and answered the queries raised by those present.
It was also attended by Union Ministers U Tin Naing Thein and U Ohn Myint and deputy ministers and officials of UN agencies and departments concerned.
