Internal migration patterns reveal the strong pull of Yangon with most internal migrants either moving within their state of origin, or to Yangon. The study highlights the enormous significance of social drivers on rural to urban migration and their close relationship with economic drivers. Aspirations for more modern lifestyles were based on (and reinforced) binary distinctions between, for example, modern and agricultural, or urban and rural.
